Bees Are Abuzz at the DLC

The Mecklenburg County Beekeepers Association together with Elizabeth Martin and Rosemary Klein helped patrons of the Davidson Farmer’s Market learn more about bees this morning at the WOW! (World of Wonder) booth.  Hundreds of humans stopped by to learn more about bees, and to see about 800 live honeybees buzzing about.

Bees and agriculture are of course inextricably linked, as bees provide the pollination services upon which so many crops depend.  As bee populations have been declining due to a colony collapse disorder, their importance has been recognized more than ever.

How can you help protect bees?  Pesticides are thought to be a cause of colony collapse disorder, so minimizing or altogether eliminating pesticides is beneficial to protecting bees.  Planting food sources that attract bees also helps.  There are a number of resources on the internet that list plants and flowers that are particularly attractive to bees in your area.  Plant something beautiful and beneficial at the same time.

If you’re not already on the WOW! mailing list, send an e-mail to dlc.wow@gmail.com to sign up.  It’s the best way to keep abreast of the many activities sponsored by WOW!  Also, come to the Davidson Farmer’s Market each Saturday and visit the WOW! booth.
