Hike to Whale Rock Will Be a Highlight of Our Annual Meeting!

Everyone is invited to our Nature Festival/Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 11, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. The event will held at the former Abersham property, a 243-acre Davidson park – and includes hikes, hands-on activities for children, information about the natural world and photography, followed by an annual meeting and an historic nature hike. “Our annual meeting is the culmination of our year of advocating, educating, and protecting land. This year we’re celebrating recently acquired conservation easements,” noted Roy Alexander, DLC Executive Director.

The hikes and walk are each limited to 25 people; first-come, first-served. Sign up at 1:30 at the Welcome Tent; all three begin at 1:45 and end at 2:30. The Nature Hike is off-trail, moderate in difficulty, and cannot accommodate strollers. Both the Bird/Butterfly Walk and Photo Walk are easy and on-trail. Bring your camera for the Photo Walk as there will be frequent stops for both seeing and shooting.

Activities for all ages

* Make pine cone bird feeders.

* Make your own terrarium. Supplies are limited – first-come, first-served, one per family.

* Learn how to identify poison ivy – and what local wildflower counteracts it.

* Come meet a Davidson beekeeper, see his equipment, learn what beekeepers do, why bees are important, and what you can do to protect them.

* Enjoy children’s activities, discover tips for identifying birds, and learn about Mecklenburg Audubon Society’s Lights Out Charlotte program.

* Speak with experienced nature photographers and learn from their work on display.

* Share your ideas for the Abersham/Allison/Fisher Farm properties.

Celebrate DLC’s year, meet our slate of new officers, and look to the future.

Historic Nature Hike: 4:00

This hike includes Whale Rock and an old mill and quarry site on 56 acres of woodland and floodplain. It will be led by Stewart Gray of the Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission and is jointly sponsored by Davidson Historical Society and DLC.  Register by clicking here. – deadline Nov 9.  Open to DLC and DHS members.

Event Directions

To reach the former Abersham property from Main Street in Davidson, proceed east 0.6 miles on Concord Road. Turn left onto Grey Road for 2.8 miles continuing past the first entrance to Abersham (Grey Rd becomes Greystone Road at the Iredell county line). Take a slight right at Shearer Road for 0.1 miles. Turn right at the main entrance to Abersham on Pleasant Garden Drive.
