Raptor Release to Kick-Off Green Day

Davidson Lands Conservancy’s “Green Day” festival will kick-off with the release of a red-shouldered hawk by the Carolina Raptor Center this Saturday at 9:45 a.m. on the Davidson Village Green, on Main St. at Concord Road. Returning the hawk to the wild will emphasize the message of environmental stewardship both organizations strive to convey.
“When we release raptors, those birds have come in injured or orphaned, and so we’ve raised them and it’s time for them to go…it’s a culmination of all the work we do in the raptor center, and it’s very exciting for us,” said Michele Miller Houck, Community Relations Director at Carolina Raptor Center.
Originally from Greer, SC., the hawk was injured or abandoned in its “hatching year,” or it’s first year of life, according to Miller Houck. The Raptor Center has cared for the bird since June 11, 2011, and he/she (sex unknown) has passed flight school, mouse school, and is flying well.
Green Day will also feature local entertainment, environmental activities for kids, and over 30 “green’ exhibitors, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, September 17th.
