Posted on 09. Feb, 2018 by in WOW! Blog

Feb. 16-19 is this year’s annual bird count. People all over the world will be counting the birds they see in fifteen minute intervals, recording what they see and sending in their counts to the Great Backyard Bird Count website. You don’t have to be an expert birder and if you are interested in learning more about birds this might be a good way to start. Here’s the link to the site that can give you more information about how to participate in this great Citizen Science activity. http://gbbc.birdcount.org.

It’s fun for the whole family. You can do it in your own yard or you can go on a walk around your neighborhood or town or go on a hike. Just count what you see. Why is it important to count birds? Well, scientists need the help of citizens all over the world to help understand how the bird populations are responding to a variety of influences including climate change and loss of tree canopy. It’s also helpful to understand migration patterns and how they might be changing. The timing of the GBBC is mid winter in the northern hemisphere and before birds begin their spring migrations. Other parts of the world have begun to join in and count birds at the same time so we have an idea about where birds are at this time of year all over the world.
